Adobe Supercharges Photoshop with New AI Tools Powered by Firefly

Adobe is continuing its rapid push into AI-powered creative tools with a fresh round of updates for Photoshop, now enhanced with its Firefly models. In a move aimed at simplifying workflows for photographers, designers, and content creators, the company has announced three major features: Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and an improved object-removal tool all now available in beta for desktop and web users.

Sharper Images with Generative Upscale

First up is Generative Upscale, a feature designed to enhance image resolution up to 8 megapixels. Whether you’re restoring old photos, preparing images for print, or adapting visuals for different platforms, this feature aims to bring out more detail and clarity using Adobe’s Firefly generative AI.

It’s a game-changer for anyone working with older, low-resolution images or needing to scale up visuals without losing quality.

Seamless Scene Integration with Harmonize

Back in 2024, Adobe previewed a feature called Project Perfect Blend, which focused on making new objects blend naturally into existing scenes by adjusting lighting, color, and shadows.

That project is now live as Harmonize.

With Harmonize, you can insert an object say, a chair into a living room photo and Photoshop will automatically:

  • Remove the object’s background
  • Adjust lighting and shadows
  • Match color tones to the existing scene

The result? A natural-looking composition where added elements don’t feel pasted on, but rather feel like they were always part of the photo.

This feature is also available on the new Photoshop iOS app through an early access program, bringing powerful AI editing to mobile users.

Smarter Object Removal

Adobe is also refining one of Photoshop’s most popular tools: object removal. In earlier versions, using generative fill to erase unwanted items sometimes caused weird glitches like when a bowl of pico de gallo was replaced with a green blob, as Photoshop’s own product director Joel Baer admitted.

Now, Adobe has reworked the algorithm to focus more precisely on the object being removed and to fill in the surrounding background more realistically. It’s designed to eliminate artifacts and reduce the need for post-fix corrections.

Additional Enhancements

Alongside the big features, Adobe is rolling out smaller updates aimed at improving productivity:

  • Improved asset management, so teams can more easily share and organize creative materials.
  • The ability to choose the Firefly model version you want to use, giving professionals more control over their AI workflows.

Built with Creators in Mind

According to Shambhavi Kadam, senior director of product management for Photoshop, the updates come directly from feedback gathered across the creative community:

“We have talked to photographers, designers, and content creators to understand what are the pain points in their workflows and what slows them down. These new features will help them save time, remove friction from their workflows, and take on some of the time-consuming tasks on their behalf.”

Available Now (in Beta)

All three major features Generative Upscale, Harmonize, and the improved object-removal tool are available in beta for Photoshop on desktop and web. If you’re using Photoshop, now’s a great time to test out these cutting-edge tools and see how much AI can lighten your creative workload.
