OpenAI has introduced a brand-new feature within ChatGPT called Study Mode, designed to foster deeper learning and critical thinking among students. Rather than simply delivering direct answers, Study Mode encourages users to engage with questions, reflect on their understanding, and develop problem-solving skills.

What Is Study Mode?

Study Mode turns ChatGPT into more than a homework helper—it becomes an interactive study partner. When enabled, ChatGPT will:

Importantly, Study Mode isn’t mandatory. Students can still switch back to regular ChatGPT mode to get straight answers. As of now, there are no admin or parental controls to lock the mode in place—OpenAI is relying on the student’s motivation to learn.

Belsky noted that parental or administrative restrictions may be explored in the future, but for now, the feature is built on student agency.

A Step Toward Smarter AI in Education

Study Mode isn’t the only effort in this space. Earlier this year, Anthropic released “Learning Mode” for its Claude chatbot, which offers similar student-focused features. Together, these moves suggest a growing awareness among AI developers of their impact on education—and a commitment to support it responsibly.

While Study Mode has its limitations, it represents OpenAI’s first major move to reshape how AI can be used in classrooms and personal learning. The company says more updates are on the way, along with research into how students interact with generative AI throughout their academic journey.
